Inspiration for your letter

Your letter will be most effective if you're telling your own authentic, personal story. However, you may want to use the examples below to guide your structure and tone. If you have an example you'd like to include below, let us know.

Protect Planned Parenthood

Dear Representative,

I am a constituent who strongly supports funding for Planned Parenthood, and am writing to urge you to do whatever it takes to preserve legal access to safe abortion, contraception and other important medical necessities such as mammograms and cervical cancer screenings.

Planned Parenthood is a dedicated, committed provider or facilitator of all these services, and one in five women will depend on the organization for care at some point in her life. I expect your office to fight to protect women and continue to fund Planned Parenthood, no matter what changes are made to health care legislation in the coming months.

This issue is a determining factor in how I vote, and I'm paying close attention.

Protect the EPA from Budget Cuts

Dear Representative,

I am a constituent writing with regards to the administration’s plans to slash the EPA budget by thirty percent in order to increase military spending. Based on my understanding, these cuts would cost the EPA 3,200 jobs and more than 30 individual programs. This is unacceptable, and I urge you to stand up publicly to fight these proposed budget cuts, and to protect our planet from environmental degradation.

Thank you for working hard to make sure that future generations will have an inhabitable planet.

This issue is a determining factor in how I vote, and I'm paying close attention.

Demand Devin Nunes Step Down from House Intelligence Committee

Dear Representative,

I am a constituent and am writing to urge you to demand that Devin Nunes step down from his chairmanship of the House Intelligence Committee. Nunes has repeatedly demonstrated that he is more committed to partisan politics than to investigating potential threats to our democracy, including the Trump administration's potential ties to Russia.

House Intelligence Committee Chair Devin Nunes has consistently demonstrated an unwillingness to seriously investigate allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 election cycle. He has dismissed evidence of Russian election tampering and attempted to redirect attention to "leaks," such as the revelation that ex-National Security Advisor Michael Flynn had lied about his past contacts with Russian officials. Now, evidence has emerged that Nunes met with an unnamed source on White House grounds to review confidential intelligence documents on March 21st.

Nunes leads the committee charged with investigating purported Russian interference in our government, yet his actions indicate he cannot carry out this responsibility impartially. His willingness to brief the very administration that his committee is supposed to be investigating without fully informing his fellow committee members further demonstrates that Nunes cannot oversee this investigation. The FBI has now formally confirmed that they are investigating the Trump administration's connections to Russia; there is no room for partisanship when protecting the integrity and independence of our elections. Devin Nunes, once a member of Trump's transition team, must step down from his committee chairmanship and recuse himself from all investigations of the Trump-Russia connection.

Your actions on this matter will be a determining factor in how I vote in the next election, and I'm paying close attention.

Demand that Jeff Sessions Resign

Dear Representative,

I'm a constituent and am writing regarding the recent news about Attorney General Jeff Sessions' communications with the Russian ambassador. Sessions spoke to the ambassador twice, yet didn't disclose these communications during his confirmation hearings. I urge you to join House Democratic Leader Pelosi, Congressman Cummings, and Senator Warren in calling for Sessions to resign. Sessions denied contact with the Russians, which means he committed perjury under oath and is not fit to run the Department of Justice.

I care deeply about this issue and will be paying close attention to your actions.

Oppose Elimination of Programs that Fund Meals on Wheels & After-School Programs

Dear Representative,

I'm a constituent and am writing you today regarding the Trump administration's budget proposal which would eliminate funding for the Community Development Block Grant Program and the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program.

These programs fund important social services like after-school programs and Meals on Wheels. They have a negligible impact on the budget, but provide essential and invaluable services to the most vulnerable members of our communities. Low-income families and the elderly (many of whom are veterans who've served our country) should not have to suffer so the taxpayers can fund the President's vacations.

Please do the right thing, and protect the Americans who depend on these services.

Oppose Cuts to the Department of Education

Dear Representative,

I'm a constituent and am writing you today regarding the Trump administration's budget proposal which would reduce the Department of Education's Budget by 13.5%.

These cuts would reduce or eliminate twenty programs within the Department of Education, including Striving Readers and Teacher Quality Partnership. Programs that help boost literacy and increase recruitment of highly qualified teachers make up a small percentage of the federal budget, but provide enormous value to our schools.

Please do the right thing, and protect the American children who depend on these services.

Education is my top priority issue, so I would appreciate a follow-up.

Oppose Elimination of Arts/Humanities Programs

Dear Representative,

I'm a constituent and am writing you today regarding the Trump administration's budget proposal which would eliminate the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Together, these four programs make up just .02% of the budget, but they deliver invaluable educational and artistic opportunities to our communities. From Sesame Street and local public radio to braille classes and free standardized test prep at libraries, these programs help Americans survive and thrive.

Please, do the right thing and stand up for the arts and humanities.

I care deeply about this issue and will be paying close attention to your actions.

Oppose Senate Bill 446 (Concealed Carry Reciprocity)

Dear Representative,

I'm a constituent and am writing regarding Senate Bill 446, which is currently being proposed to Congress. Gun violence kills ninety-one Americans every day, and this bill is an attempt by the gun lobby to gut our existing gun laws.

This bill would force all fifty states to honor loose restrictions on concealed carry, potentially allowing stalkers, domestic abusers, and people with no safety training to carry hidden, loaded guns in public -- even the legally blind! We can't allow a special interest agenda to overrule common sense and the safety of American families.

Please do the right thing, and make sure that this bill does not become law.

Obviously, my family’s safety is an important issue to me, and I’ll be paying close attention to your actions on this bill.

Oppose H.R. 7 -- Oppose The Attempt To Defund Abortions

Dear Representative,

I'm a constituent and am writing to let you know that I’m appalled that the House passed HR.7. Women deserve to make their own medical choices and I want you to protect legal access to safe abortion by voting NO on HR.7.

This bill would defund any medical insurance that covers abortion of federal funds, regardless of the circumstance.

I expect you to stand up for women's reproductive rights, and will be watching closely.
